By Elizabeth Esguerra Castillo
“Inspiration does exist, but it must find you working.” – Pablo Picasso “An artist’s world is boundless, limitless. Inspiration for art can be found anywhere.
The next talented Global Pinoy Visual Artist to watch out for is Marlene “Ayen” Galit from the province of Quezon!
Ayen as she is fondly called is a Contemporary Filipino Artist to watch out for with her signature art style of skillfully combining Pointillism with Figurative images creating stunning and eye-catching masterpieces which truly captivates her audience. She discovered her knack for the Arts at a tender age of six years old.
According to her: “Art can inspire, educate and be a form of expression to the future generations, and it can also criticize, heal and evoke questions.” In our short interview with the Celebrated Artist, she stresses that in creating art, colors and shapes are not the only key elements to consider but also how it will influence or affect people who would be seeing it.
It’s not a great secret that art can impact lots of people’s lives in very meaningful and deep ways. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” can attest to this much at the very least. Whether you think art is painting on a canvas or scenes from the nature that surrounds you, what we deem art can affect us all in one way or the other.
Our Featured Artist’s main art genre is reminiscent of the works of the Great Gustav Klimt. And it is no wonder since Ayen stated that he is her greatest art influence admiring the artist’s talent in depicting symbolic illustrations in his masterpieces.

Get to know more about Ayen in our interview with her:
1. When did you discover that you have an inclination towards the Arts?
Answer: I discovered my talent when I was six years old. My father was a photographer and I was inspired to draw when I saw the pictures he had taken. It struck me then that I wanted to create something beautiful in my own way which is drawing.
2. What is your art style?
Answer: My signature style is pointillism which is evident in most of my works. Pointillism is a technique in painting wherein an artist creates an image out of small colorful dots. I have combined figurative images and pointillism to create a unique style. Pointillism suits me the most because I can freely express the thought, feelings and emotions in a more poignant way. When creating something artistic, it’s not just about getting the right colors or shapes together nor what other people will say about it. When creating art, be it in any forms, it must come from within yourself.
3. How do you define art?
Answer: Art can inspire, educate and be a form of expression to the future generations, and it can also critize, heal and evoke questions. Art is helpful in understanding each other as well as the history. It is a tool to build bridges between people of different race, culture and age. Art makes you think about what you see or feel.
4. Who is your art influence and why?
Answer: I’d say my biggest influence is Gustav Klimt with his lavish stylistically patterned style of artwork. Not only do I find his art inspiring in a technical level with his skillful understand of color and combinations but also with how he was able to find just the right balance of ambiguity in depicting symbolic concepts in his works.
5. How does Art affect our lives?
Answer: It is undeniable that being exposed to art will make you feel better, boost your mood, bring up positive emotions and push away negativity. Art makes the world brighter, more interesting and alive.
6. Do you believe that art can heal us emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and physically?
Answer: Yes, I believe that art is capable of healing us emotionally and physically because it works for me, I feel at ease in my mind and body. Unlike exercise which works your body or meditation which clears your mind, Art can access both mind and body, and promotes healing. Another benefit of painting is the feeling of satisfaction that comes from creating a masterpiece. Being able to sit back and admire your work, that feeling of accomplishment and pride in yourself, can have a transformative impact in you.
7. Do you have any plans of exploring other art genres?
Answer: Yes, I want to explore more and be out of my comfort zone when creating art. I want to try new things, ideas and taking more risks in my artworks. If a door opens, go through it. Always move forward.
8. Do you still see yourself creating art even if years passed?
Answer: Yes, I see myself doing just that. For me, every day is another chance to do new things and be a new version of myself.
9. What is your message to young and aspiring artists out there?
Answer: Always believe in yourself. Trust your instincts and no need to rush everything. Enjoy every part of the process, it is all valuable even the failures. Just paint without worrying about what other people would think. Create as much as you can: Nothing will help you grow and develop as an artist more than practicing. Be it small or big, paint what you feel and enjoy. You will learn as much as what doesn’t work as you will from those that do, there are endless possibilities.
