Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Emancipation Day. It is recognized as a state holiday or observance in most states and is increasingly being recognized as a national holiday. Juneteenth celebrations often include parades, picnics, and other community events that honor African American history and culture.
